Your parents were in the US military and you travelled around the world a lot as a child. I really love what Oprah Winfrey has done in terms of founding her own company but also with improving how people communicate.
I’d love to do any kind of project like that. I grew up reading The Chronicles Of Narnia so I’m really into that fantasy kind of thing. I just love that whole world – it’s so much fun and opens your mind up to those fantasy, magical possibilities. I’m a bit old but those kids are growing up fast, so perhaps I could pass for one. How can you not like Harry Potter? Maybe there are some students I could play. I’m not a Harry Potter fan – what part would you want? I’ve been working on my English accent for it. I would love to be in a Harry Potter film. I’d love to and I’m always looking out for stuff. I know people sometimes change religion when they get married and I guess that’s cool – you’ve got to have some sort of family agreement – but it’s hard to switch beliefs. If you believe the sky is blue, you’re not suddenly going to be able to say it’s red. You either believe something or you don’t – it’s all about what’s in your heart. I don’t know how you can change your religion like you change clothes. Would you change your religion to get ahead in your career? I got on well with her on set¿ she’s a smart, mature girl and she’s very nice.

Can’t you be a Scientologist plus whatever it is you were before? Her parents are very Catholic. Is she a Scientologist? I don’t know much about it. Did you expect your First Daughter co-star, Katie Holmes, to become a Scientologist? You don’t want to keep doing the same stuff. It was a way of getting a different type of energy on the album and doing something I hadn’t done before, which is important when it comes to doing music. I just wanted to say ‘OK, I’m a nice girl but this is another side of me’. Can we expect to see you in chaps and nipple tassels like Christina Aguilera? You’ve said this album is more sexual than your first because people thought you were a ‘goody-goody’. That’s the one area I don’t like to talk about. That’s where the song Man Up featuring Nas comes from. I wanted to show on the album that there are different ways of being in love, especially from a strong perspective. What’s that all about?Ī lot of people think that if you’ve fallen in love, you have to act stupid but I wanted to show that, especially for women, you don’t have to be a complete idiot just because you’re in love. The press release says that you’re ‘open to love and supportive but you’re no man’s fool’. Now I guess they’re getting the best of both worlds. This time around, I’d done a couple of tours and wanted to do something different, plus it was three years after the last album and I’d grown both artistically and as a person. It was more like a driving record – it had a soulful vibe, it wasn’t a dance record. Your first album, All I Have, didn’t sell too great over here. I never like to talk about things before they’re finalised but I have had discussions with my manager about doing something like that. Have you got any plans to launch your own range of merchandise – clothes, for example?
It would definitely fill the gap in the market for people who like food smells. It would have a caramel, chocolatey, vanilla smell – there aren’t many food-based perfumes. I have an idea already of what it would smell like.
Do you fancy launching your own perfume, like she did? Rich also produced J-Lo’s Get Right single. Yeah, but Richard’s been my long-time collaborator – we’ve worked together for years. But your producer Rich Harrison also produced her track Crazy In Love. The comparison’s not a bad thing, though – she’s terrific. We’re young females who sing and dance but that’s where the similarities end. People sometimes compare me to her but I don’t think we’re too alike. I don’t think Beyoncé needs a replacement.

Amerie has also worked as a TV presenter and an actress, starring in First Daughter. She follows it with the release of the title track from her album Touch. Her ‘Washington go-go’ track 1 Thing single-handedly established her as the ‘new Beyoncé’ and is arguably this year’s best single so far. US singer Amerieis half African-American and half Korean.
